Xplor Fuego - Where Adventure Awaits!

If you're staying in Cancun or Riviera Maya and want to experience something fun outside the resort without losing and entire day, Xplor Fuego may be a great option for you. This is basically an adventure theme park with five different activities to enjoy. You arrive at about 5:30pm (your transport time will depend on how far away your hotel is, ours was about an hour each way). Once you check in and receive your equipment (helmet, locker key, etc.) you proceed to the locker room to store your valuables (note: there is a lot of walking but it’s through beautiful underground caves). It is suggested that you take a change of clothes because you will get wet, you should also take a towel to dry off as they are not provided. I’d also suggest that you eat something right before your departure as the activities require some fuel to get you through.

Now – you can complete the circuit however you wish but based on my recent experience, this is what I suggest:

  1. Skip or start with the rafts. It was everyone in our group (12ppl) least favorite activity so I actually suggest that you skip it but if you want to see what it’s about, then do it first and get it out of the way. You will get wet and your arms will get tired because you have to physically paddle the raft through the caves.
  2. Once the rafts are done you’ll want a quick shot of adrenaline to get you excited about the park again. Therefore I suggest the hammock zip-line. This is the perfect activity for anyone – even those who don’t think they want to do zip lines. It’s only two lines, they are not high, not long and they are all over water. It’s a quick activity, taking less than 10 minutes and super fun.
  3. Now that you’re already soaking wet from the hammock zip line and have had a rest from the rafts, it’s time for the river swim/float. There are two circuits, a 5 minute one and a 25 minutes one. This is because you’re responsible for paddling yourself (no raft) through the water. However you’re wearing a life jacket that gives you automatic buouncy and really you can exert as little or much energy as you want to complete the circuit. I suggest doing the 25 minute one because there are 4 “emergency exit” spots where you can get off if you cannot complete the full circuit.
  4. Now you’re wet and hungry but it’s time for another adrenaline rush – the full zip line circuit! This is the last “wet” activity and while you may be in a line to get started, it goes very quick after the first “line”. We completed the circuit in about 25 minutes (7 lines) and it was awesome to do it over the dark jungle. This activity was everyone’s favorite.
  5. Now it’s time to dry off in the locker rooms, shower (your choice) and change into some dry clothes.
  6. Next stop – the full buffet. Xplor doesn’t disappoint in the food and drink selection and you’ll likely be famished by this point.
  7. After you’ve eaten it’s time for one the dry activity: the amphibious vehicles. Take a drive along the circuit and enjoy the adventure while seated and taking multiple photos.
  8. Bonus – The bonfire. You did it! If you still have time go to the bonfire to hang out and congratulate yourself on a job well done.

*Please note that Xplor Fuego is NOT childfree and allows children 7 years and older to enjoy the park but we saw younger children during our night there.

Excellence Playa Mujeres

This month is "Excellent Resorts" month. We just returned from the "Playa Mujeres" property in a last week and in this post we tell you all about it!

Excellence Playa Mujeres is, well in a word, Excellent. It’s mainly a couples resort with lots of people celebrating their honeymoons and anniversaries. However, most everyone is very social and it’s easy to make friends. On any given day the group I traveled with had adopted some new members. The ages are also very mixed, 20s – 60s but everyone is socializing and having a great time.

Upon arrival we were greeted with champagne (which we drank even though it was only 8am!) and cold towels. As it was so early, our rooms were not ready yet but we had already anticipated this. So as planned, we ate breakfast, dipped our toes into the ocean and headed over to our pre-scheduled spa appointments (you get a 20% discount if you book them prior to arrival). The spa is beautiful and even though we booked separate treatments, since we were three couples, we each were given a couples suite. By early in the afternoon our rooms were ready and we had all been graciously upgraded to the Excellence Club. This upgrade is worth it for room location, liquor and the private lounge and beach area – it’s something I would pay the extra money for. The room is amazing – all of them are pretty identical (the swim-up suite just has a bigger terrace and the rooftop has the 2nd floor deck) and they are big and beautiful. This is probably one of the most impressive “standard” rooms I have ever stayed in (which is saying A LOT as I have stayed at 4-5 star hotels around the world).

Try as we might, we weren’t able to make it to all of the restaurants during our 4 night stay but we did manage to eat at: The Lobster House, The Grill, Chez Isabelle, Spice, Los Olas and Toscana. The Lobster House and The Grill are located over the main pool and it’s basically one bldg. split in half. I ate at The Lobster House 5 different times, once for lunch, once for dinner and three times for breakfast. This is the only place to get an a la carte breakfast and I liked their selections (they even have a waffle menu). The lunch was good and at dinner (the only time they actually serve lobster) I highly recommend you get the steamed lobster over the grilled one. The Grill serves burgers and such at lunch and turns into a Steakhouse in the evenings. At dinner their asparagus appetizer is killer and I enjoyed my rib-eye which was cooked perfectly. Our favorite place was Chez Isabelle – the décor was beautiful and the sea bass was amazing. Next I was pleasantly surprised by Spice. We weren’t able to sit at the hibachi but they served us an amazing mixed grill plate with lobster, shrimp, chicken and beef. Toscana was also good, (they serve buffets for breakfast and lunch with a la carte Italian for dinner). I’m putting Los Olas in a different category because it’s the beach “shack” but every day they cook something different and everyday people were pleased with the offerings and quality. There’s also a pizza oven for lunch and yes they are great, in 4 days my small group easily consumed over 20 personal pizzas!

The drinks were all delicious and plentiful. Ask them to make you a “Little Beer” – it’s not actual beer at all, it’s a shot made with “Liquor 43” and cream which sounds weird but is totally delish. We ordered a round every night! A favorite among my group was the Mango Tango but I also suggest the Mojito, Cadillac Margarita, Strawberry Cadillac Margarita (blended), the Coconut Monkeys (Pina Colada's) and plenty of water! The bottles in your room are amazingly free and if you don’t drink them, take them home!

We only managed to see one show (we were too busy enjoying the restaurants) but it was very entertaining – they bring in some real talent to entertain. The resort also boasts three new features: A bona fide Sports Bar (complete with about 20 big screen TV’s), a coffee bar (that also serves pastries, paninis and homemade ice cream) and free calls to the USA and Canada. I love the free calls (previously a perk only offered by Palace Resorts) because it’s very helpful for parents who are taking a vacation away from the kids but who would still like to check up on them; and/or people who cannot truly escape their business obligations while on vacation and may need to make/take some calls while on-property. I can relate to the 2nd one as I still had some clients to take care of while I was away. I can also give kudos to the resorts WiFi signal which was strong everywhere we went, including the beach and very easy to connect to.

The staff is also great. They work very hard to make sure that you are having a great time but they also have a great sense of humor. We enjoyed engaging with them on our trip. Also, even though it's technically included, it's always great to tip. A few bucks here and there means way more to them than it does to us and most importantly, they earn it!

Overall my group (three travel agents w/ companions and two clients) left Excellence Playa Mujeres not only excited to tell our friends and clients about it – but vowing to return. It was an amazing getaway and a great reminder of why it’s always a pleasure to travel childfree!

Excellence Punta Cana: Q&A with a Client

This month is "Excellent Resorts" month. We're going to the "Playa Mujeres" property in a couple of weeks and we cannot wait to tell you all about it! In honor of our trip, we'll be sharing information about this resort chain with locations in Mexico & Dominican Republic over the next few weeks.

A client and her friends recently took a quick trip to Excellence Punta Cana (March 5-8) and upon her return was nice enough to give me some feedback on her stay.

What did you like about the resort?
There was beautiful landscaping and pools.  The pool water and ocean were a comfortable temperature, although the ocean was a bit rough the days we were there.  Guest relations at the resort were excellent.  Everyone was really nice, the employees all seemed to enjoy their jobs and definitely wanted to make sure you were enjoying your time. The resort was completely full, but it never felt crowded.  The other guests were generally outgoing and friendly, too. They used some really large mosquito foggers are night, but they worked because we never saw any mosquitos. Rooms were spacious, large jacuzzi tub.  Rooms on the first floors had an outside area with hammocks.  Our room was on the top floor so we had high ceilings but a small balcony. Our friends loved buying cigars from the cigar shop on property (which only took cash, no credit cards).

How was the food?
Food overall was decent.  A lot of variety with the restaurant choices.  We weren't there long enough to try them all out, but we enjoyed our dinner at the French restaurant, Chez Isabelle, the most.  Breakfast buffet at Toscana had a ton of options - omelet station, cereal and granola station, fruit, a large variety of fresh juices, etc.  Cafe Kafe is a bar by the beach and it was just what we needed for an afternoon snack.  Plenty of bars spread around the resort and a fun pool bar!  Favorite drink was the Coco Loco which was served in a coconut!  Martini Bar near the lobby has wonderful drinks (definitely my favorite bar to get drinks in the evenings).  Drinks were not watered down and they had good liquor.  Only served one kind of beer, Presidente, which is a Dominican Republic beer. The most disappointing was The Lobster House. The lobster was overcooked and mushy, didn't seem fresh.  They brought out red wine that had been stored in a refrigerator and then they put it in an ice bucket.  The wine was not good at all.

Did you enjoy the activities?
The activities people wander around the resort and tell you about different activities.  We were only there for two days so we chose a half day (10am - 2pm) snorkeling tour that we purchased through the hotel.  The shuttle picked us up at 10am in the hotel lobby, then it was about a 30 minute drive to a resort where we got on the boat.  There were 8 of us so we had our own private boat.  They had beer and rum for everyone.  After snorkeling they took us to a sandbar which was in the prettiest water.  They had an underwater camera and they took a lot of pictures of us (which was an additional charge to purchase).  We had to pay for all of this in cash, no credit cards were accepted.

Did you have any disappointments?
Not really for the hotel (outside of The Lobster Restaurant). In general it can be a bit overwhelming if you're not prepared for the all of the vendors/solicitors coming up to you when exiting the airport.  My friends first impression was that they were going to be harassed the entire time.  I wasn't surprised because the airport in Cabo San Lucas is the same way.

All-Inclusive: Cruises vs. Resorts

Did you know that “Childfree Travel” only promotes preferred resorts that are all-inclusive? Sometimes all-inclusive resorts can get a bad reputation for offering a low-quality, cookie-cutter product at a bargain-basement price. While those properties do exist, they are the complete opposite from the luxury, all-inclusive products in our portfolio. During the month of March we are going to explore all-inclusive travel and discover some of the amazing features our childfree resorts offer for our clients.

I have recently had some potential clients come to me asking if I sell cruises. In fact I don’t sell cruises, I can but I choose not to. I find all-inclusive resort vacations to be a better value for clients and such, I have decided to specialize in this area. Don’t get me wrong, I have nothing against cruises, I have been on several of them and plan to go on two more before I die (Alaska & Panama). However when deciding which product I wanted to promote to my clients (who trust me to steer them in the right direction) they were not my first choice. A big reason I have for feeling this way? I think they are misleading.

Let’s start with price. To use as an example, I priced a standard 7-night Caribbean cruise with RCCL out of Galveston, TX. The lowest stateroom category prices at $952.00 per person. This does not include the taxes which are an extra $90.00 per person, so the actual cost is $1042.00 per person. Then once you board the cruise will add gratuities for their staff, automatically. This cost is and additional $84.00 per person, now we're at a total cost $1126.00 per person, almost $174.00 per person more than advertised. When you are given an upfront price for an all-inclusive (from my agency anyway), that’s the price, there are no hidden fees or taxes and gratuities are included.

Second, the stateroom categories are confusing for the average traveler. On my sample sailing the ship is the Navigator of the Seas there are: seven interior stateroom categories, three ocean view categories, six balcony categories and three deluxe categories. That’s 19 room categories, just about more than double a standard resort. These categories are all based on ship placement: lower decks vs. upper decks and/or front vs. middle vs. back of the ship.

Third is the quality of the accommodations. Check out one of my previous blogs and you’ll see what types of accommodations are available at the upscale properties we feature. On this cruise for example, the interior room you’re paying over $2200.00 for is a 150 square foot space with two twin beds that convert to a Royal King size bed, sitting area, vanity area, and a private bathroom. Yes, that’s it. Oh wait, I almost forgot - this is an interior room so there is no window in this type of room.

Fourth, cruise lines sell themselves as all-inclusive but they really aren’t. They don’t include all the beverages, most food and some of the activities. Let’s start with food. It used to be that cruise lines included all food, period. That started to change several years ago with the announcement of Specialty Dining. These are separate restaurants with a la carte dining that include off the menu options or a surcharge. The following dining options that cost extra are: Chops Grille (Steakhouse), Izumi (Asian), Sabor (Mexican), Giovanni’s (Italian), Mystery Dinner Theater and Johnny Rockets (American, Hamburger). What’s left, traditional dining rooms, a coffee shop, a lunchtime café and 24/7 room service (where a fee may still apply).

As for beverages – please understand that they are not included. Therefore they offer six beverages packages ranging from bottled water (yes, a drink package for water) to the “Ultimate Drink Package” which includes cocktails, beer, wine, coffee, tea, juice, soda, etc. The ship also has Wine Tasting package which you also need to pay for. (Please remember, these types of drinks are all included at our featured resorts).

Then there are activities, yes cruise lines provide plenty of activities for guests to partake in but they are not all included. Here are the ones you must pay extra for with RCCL: fitness classes, dance classes, cooking demos, jewelry making, scrapbooking, etc. They also don’t include tours (some of our resorts do) and while you can catch a promotion such as a $25 - $150 shipboard credit, that’s nothing on the $1500 resort credit some of our properties offer.

All this being said, here is the main reason we don’t offer cruises: THEY ARE NOT CHILDFREE!!!

El Dorado Spa Resorts & Hotels by Karisma: The Gourmet Inclusive Experience

Did you know that “Childfree Travel” only promotes preferred resorts that are all-inclusive? Sometimes all-inclusive resorts can get a bad reputation for offering a low-quality, cookie-cutter product at a bargain-basement price. While those properties do exist, they are the complete opposite from the luxury, all-inclusive products in our portfolio. During the month of March we are going to explore all-inclusive travel and discover some of the amazing features our childfree resorts offer for our clients.

Just because all of our resorts offer an "all-inclusive" experience does not mean that they offer the SAME all-inclusive experience. This is very apparent with the four El Dorado properties in Riviera Maya. Their inclusive concept focuses on food and thus is aptly named the "Gourmet Inclusive Experience".
